- How long have you known Mark?10 years
- Three words to describe Mark: Wise, funny, and unpredictable
- If Mark created a nickname for you, what is it and where did it come from?
Mark used to call me “Basil”…clearly a play off my last name.
- Funny memory with Mark:
One of the best Shull memories is that time we were having YL Club at the Cos Cob fire station and he tried to convince me be the “Jim-Carrey-In-Living-Color-Firemarshall-Bill” character. He literally asked the Cos Cob fire marshall if they could light me on fire and then extinguish me in front of the kids.
- How has Mark impacted your life?
I owe so much of my success in Young Life to Mark Shull. He personally took me under his wing and mentored me in all of the ways of Young Life (…all I brought to the table was my youth, good looks and charm). I would shadow him, watch what he did and try to mimic it. His contact work at GHS was especially remarkable. I figuratively “stood on his shoulders” and tried my best to carry the “Young Life of Greenwich” torch to the next generation. One of the best pieces of advice he ever gave me was not to be afraid to “push the envelope.” “Don’t be afraid to fail,” he would say, “your an intern. Your suppose to fail.” That was a god piece of advice for me!
- What do you think Mark’s legacy will be? What is his lasting imprint on the world?
A great sense of humor, a great ability to disciple young men and an uncanny ability to reach all types of people.

By pouring into my hubs Tony – can’t thank you enough for all of the encouragement and “bro-ness” that comes along with that! - How long have you known Mark?4-5 years
- Three words to describe Mark: Funny, Upbeat, Encouraging
- If Mark created a nickname for you, what is it and where did it come from?
Nothing special……just my last name.
- Funny memory with Mark:
Well, we haven’t spent a whole lot of one on one time together….it’s been mostly with our boys which is great. Would’ve loved to have known you back in the college days though!
- How has Mark impacted your life?
Mark…you have been a great friend these past few years. Honestly, you have really impacted my family mostly through your interaction with my boys….through sports. Cole and Trent think you are awesome, and you would not believe how much they respect you as a coach. Remember when I told Trent that the Braves had fired Fredi Gonzalez this year and he said….with a totally straight face and being 100% serious…..”maybe Coach Mark can be the coach for the Braves”.
I know Pam wouldn’t mind one bit if I spent more time around you. You are a good, godly man (as she puts it).
You’re the best buddy, and we’ve had some good times up at the lake as well. Hope we can spend more time around you, Chris and the kids. It would be great for our families to grow up together……
- What do you think Mark’s legacy will be? What is his lasting imprint on the world?
Definitely being the #1, hands down, best coach around. I mean it man……you have a gift with coaching kids.
- Anything else you’d like to say to wish Mark Happy 50th Birthday!
…..you don’t look a day past 60.
Happy Birthday Bro!!! The Witte’s luv ya!!!!

- How long have you known Mark?6 years or so
- Three words to describe Mark: insightful, winsome, passionate
- If Mark created a nickname for you, what is it and where did it come from?
Petey-used by various friends over the years but it is a very effective and warm nickname that I still enjoy. It is fun to have it used by Mark!
- Funny memory with Mark:
I wasn’t there but the constant telling, retelling and joking about the day Greg Howell took the plunge off the cliff at the lake in Alabama. It is one story that I can enjoy even though I wasn’t there. I think Mark gets more joy telling of Greg’s jump than Greg has even gotten.
- How has Mark impacted your life?
I appreciate the friendship that started with Mark at Willy’s many years ago.. From that first meeting, I could tell that Mark walks with the Lord and lives out of this spiritual base in how he approaches life. He has impacted me by his concern, care and guidance over these years. We don’t as much time together but when we do, it is below the surface and hitting good issues life. I appreciate the way he can get things going with a good question or insight that can make for a lively conversation.
- What do you think Mark’s legacy will be? What is his lasting imprint on the world?
Raising up men who love Jesus and are seeking to honor Him with their lives! I’ve seen him commit this to the vision of his work at Buckhead Church as well as living it out daily with his boys! Way to go, Mark!!!!
- Anything else you’d like to say to wish Mark Happy 50th Birthday!
Happy 50th Birthday!!
